How to Renovate a Sofa

Your sofa will be one of the most important pieces of furniture in your living room and house as a whole. For this reason, you’ll want to make sure that it’s the best it can be, but it can be a considerable outlay to buy a new one. If you’ve got a sofa that you feel could do with a bit of a refresh, but isn’t quite ready for the trash, then there are a few things that you can do to give it a new lease of life.

The first step in renovating any sofa is to give it a thorough clean. You might be surprised by how it looks after you’ve done so it’s always worth doing. Some sofas will be a lot more difficult to clean than others, depending on whether you can take the cover off or not. If you’ve got leather, then it might be worth using a special leather rejuvenating product or feeder.

It’s certainly not the first thing that will come to mind, but if your sofa has visible feet, or other wooden framing, it could be a good idea to do some repainting. You can stick with the old colour, or come up with something completely new. Chipped paint on the arms or feet instantly makes a sofa look less impressive, unless you’re going for a shabby chic look.

If you’re handy with a sewing machine, then creating a whole new cover is one of the very best things that you can do. Search for fabrics that fit with your décor, and you can have almost anything you like. Remember to consider comfort when you pick fabric – while some may look great, they can be coarse and uncomfortable. Also think about durability and colour fastness, to ensure that you’re being practical.

You can in fact make your sofa look a little more stylish without any DIY. New cushions and throws can really liven things up. Contrasting colours look great when they stand out against the sofa fabric, but remember to keep things in line with the rest of the room. You can easily purchase new covers for old cushions.

If your old sofa is beyond repair, then you may well consider getting a new one. Visit for large corner sofas, and to take a look at how you can design a bespoke one.
