On the roof of ARoS the audience has the opportunity to experience the Danish / Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson’s spectacular work of art, Your rainbow panorama.
A ROOM WITHOUT BORDERS
Olafur Eliasson describes the project with the following words:
Your rainbow panorama enters into a dialogue with the existing architecture and reinforces what is already given, namely views of the city. I have created a space which virtually erases the boundaries between inside and outside – where people are a little unsure as to whether you have stepped into a work or into part of the museum. This uncertainty is important to me because it encourages people to think and sense beyond the dimensions, they are used to commit themselves in.
The realization of this unique rooftop project has been made ??possible through a partnership between AR o S , Aarhus and Realdania as Realdania finance the establishment of Your rainbow panorama.
Olafur Eliasson has created this permanent work of art as a circular 150 meters long and three meters wide walkway made of glass in every color imaginable. The colorful masterpiece has a diameter of 52 meters and is mounted on slender columns 3.5 meters above the museum’s roof.
Museum guests will by stairs and elevator access to the great work of art. From here visitors can embark on a sensory journey through the circular panoramic course with views of the surrounding city and bay.
During the “floating” work of art is the roof and its approximately 1500 square meters were covered with wood, so the roof surface is a unique recreational area and a viewing platform for visitors to the museum fifty meters above street level.
Your rainbow panorama will be visible from afar, and when you look different colors depending on where in the city you are in, operate the plant as a compass. At night, Your rainbow panorama illuminated by spotlights on the floor.
DANTE’S DIVINE COMEDY
AR o S building is built on the concept of Dante’s “Divine Comedy” and with the realization of rooftop project the connection between heaven and hell is completed – the latter by the exhibition “The 9 Spaces” on the museum’s lower floor with works by Bill Viola , James Turrell, Tony Oursler, and Pipilotti Rist, the former with Your rainbow panorama.
The jury behind rooftop project in AR o S there was no doubt about the winner as Olafur Eliasson’s project in 2007 was selected in competition among five proposals. The committee’s report says among other things, the winning entry:
“The project meets a brilliant way competition’s desire to convert AR o S ‘roof for a unique, artistic and architectural landmark of international standing. The proposal creates a beautiful and poetic place that combines the panoramic view from the roof with a unique artistic-architectural dimension, which helps to develop new understandings of architecture artistic interfaces. At the same time established a strong identity landmark for ARoS and Aarhus city. ”
The construction of the extensive art project started in May 2009 and in the summer of 2010 began the installation of the now completed walkway. The artwork has cost 60 million. dollars and is funded by Realdania, while the rooftop terrace is funded by Merchant Herman Salling Fund. Aarhus is the owner of the museum building contractor on the project.
